David Lereah - former chief economist with the National Association of Realtors
This guy is one of the cheer leaders who helped march America and much of the world into financial oblivion. As the Chief Economist of the National Association of Realtors, a position he held through early 2007, he did way more than issue rosy forecasts. He regularly trumpeted the infallibility of housing as an investment in interviews, on TV and in his 2005 book, Are You Missing the Real Estate Boom?. Lereah says he grew concerned about the direction of the market in 2006, but consider his January 2007 statement: "It appears we have established a bottom." A Nostradamus he clearly is not.
Now here is a guy who is supposed to be the chief economist, who presumably read a news paper or two and who must have had more than a passing interest in the toxicity of the ARM mortgage industry, didn’t you see just a few cracks in the stucco you idiot? Well clearly not and his constant hammering of the public with his theories on life and investing should now have the favor returned and for this very reason he makes our list of Americas most smashable.
